Matri: The Revolution in Period Pain Relief Inspired By a Dream Under a Kolkata Streetlight

The Pain That Always Has Been There, But Never Talked About

Period pain is still whispered about behind closed doors, where girls press their faces into pillows so no one hears them cry.

It's the pain that makes you cancel plans, fake smiles and say “I’m fine” when you’re not. For five long days, she fought through the noise of life  meetings, classes, and smiles while inside, her body battled a storm of pain.

If you’re a woman, this is familiar.

If you love a woman, you’ve seen this.

Every month, millions of women feel waves of pain crashing again and again… almost like labour.  . But when it comes to period pain relief,  what do they have to fight it?

A hot water bag, strip of painkillers or worse  nothing, just the old advice to "deal with it."

It’s not fair. And it’s not enough.

Even the government, under its RMNCH+A strategy, has acknowledged menstrual hygiene as a critical issue - launching programs like free pad distribution in schools and campaigns like Swachh Vidyalaya. But the deeper fight against period poverty still continues, as highlighted in this Observer Research Foundation article on improving menstrual hygiene in India.

But two boys from Howrah, Kolkata Roni Mondal and Rohan Roy  saw it differently.

They didn’t just see the pain. They chose to do something about it.

This is the story of Matri a wearable period pain reliever that’s not just easing cramps, but quietly changing the way we care for women.”

Roni and Rohan weren’t doctors. They didn’t have fancy business degrees either.

They were just two best friends from school the - kind of guys who could spend hours playing with wires, building little IoT gadgets out of pure curiosity.

While studying at RCC Institute of Information Technology, something hit them. For all their tech skills, they hadn’t created a single thing that could help the women around them  their moms, sisters and neighbours all silently dealing with period pain.

That’s when the idea of building a wearable period pain relief device was born.

We can’t feel it, but maybe… we can fix it.”

Birth of Matri — Technology Meets Empathy

In 2018, Roni and Rohan built the first Matri prototype not in a lab, but with heart, wires, and a mission. This makred the intitail spark of Matri, representing a small step toward relief for millions of women.

Matri is a portable, wearable, and rechargeable electronic device that relieves menstrual pain using specific electric pulses. Within 10–15 minutes, it starts reducing pain. On a pain scale of 0-10, users report their pain dropping to just 2-3 after using Matri. No medication, No side effects.  "It’s where science meets empathy  and that’s what makes it different."

And the best part? It’s small, wireless, and so discreet you can use it anytime  at work, in class, or even while travelling.

Steps To Use Matri:

       1. Fix the two self adhesive gel pads on the lower abdomen

2.Turn on the device and use it for 10 to 15 minutes

The Science Behind Matri – Gate Control Theory

Matri isn’t magic  - it’s science rooted in empathy.

It works on the Gate Theory of Pain, sending gentle TENS (Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation) pulses through the lower abdomen. These pulses block pain signals before they can even reach the brain.

So, what makes Matri different?

It’s not a generic device.
It’s designed with a custom pulse pattern  - created especially for the uterine muscles.
The technology is inspired by physiotherapy, but reimagined into a small, wearable form for everyday use.

They’ve even applied for a patent on this unique waveform - because no one’s done it like this before.

This isn’t just another gadget.
It’s period pain relief that’s actually built for period

From Homes to Hospitals: Matri's Impact Is Real

They tested Matri first on the people they loved and  then, on 400+ women across colleges, streets, communities.
 The result?

  •  90% reported significant pain relief
  •  CDSCO (Central Drugs Standard Control Organization) granted test license
  • Now undergoing clinical testing at AIIMS Patna & GIMS Greater Noida

Women didn’t just feel better - they felt seen, finally.

Struggles Behind the Scenes -From Bulbs To Breakthrough

Their journey wasn’t smooth.

They had no funding  just an idea and a lot of determination.. So what did they do?

They started making and selling LED bulbs on Kolkata streets.

For three months, they sold 50 bulbs each of them made 25-25 , raised ₹60,000, and used it to build their prototype. After 14 iterations, they finally created the version of Matri you see today.

Their dedication caught the attention of IIT Patna, which offered them pre-incubation support and later, ₹10 lakhs in seed funding.

Shark Tank India -The Moment Everything Changed

In Shark Tank India Season 3, Episode 24, Roni and Rohan pitched Matri.
The sharks were amazed. This wasn’t just a device -it was a movement.

Aman Gupta and Namita Thapar came on board with an offer of ₹60 lakhs for 4% equity - valuing Matri at ₹15 crore.

The world finally saw what Roni and Rohan had been building all these years - a product with purpose.

This could be bigger than you imagine,” another Shark added.
“Don’t wait for the world to catch up. Push it forward. Let Matri be the product women talk about in college corridors, office canteens, and even waiting rooms of clinics.

The room went quiet - not from doubt, but from the weight of the words.
This wasn’t just a pitch anymore. It was a spark.
A push from seasoned entrepreneurs who saw not just the product, but the possibility.

They didn’t say if Matri would change lives.
They said when.

Why Matri Isn’t Just a Device - It’s a Mission

Roni and Rohan don’t identify themselves as  entrepreneurs. They call themselves allies.
They aren’t just trying to grow a business. They’re trying to break a taboo.

They want Matri to be in:

  • Every home
  • Every hospital
  • Every school nurse’s kit
  • Every woman’s handbag

Because no one should suffer silently not anymore.

Their mission?
“A pain-free period for every woman. Every day. Every month.”

The Future: Matri 2.0 for Labour Pain

And they’re just getting started.

Their next project? Matri 2.0 - designed to reduce labour pain using similar pulse technology.

Yes, they’re planning to be there for women not just during periods - but during childbirth too.

Because pain may be a part of biology, but suffering doesn’t have to be.
